This initiative aims to bring Bitcoin to the Signal messenger

  • A grassroots campaign is calling on the encrypted messaging app Signal to integrate private Bitcoin payments via the Cashu protocol. The goal is to subject money transactions to the same privacy standards that Signal already offers for messaging.
  • For this purpose, the “Bitcoin for Signal” project has developed its own version of the app, which incorporates Cashu ecash as a payment function. This allows users to send Bitcoin anonymously and directly within the app – similar to how they send messages today.
  • The messenger currently offers payments via MobileCoin, but its low adoption and separate cryptocurrency make it difficult to use. Cashu, on the other hand, uses Bitcoin as its foundation and enables completely private transactions through Chaumian blind signatures.
  • “Signal protects our communications – Cashu can do the same for our money,” the campaign page states. The developers emphasize that Bitcoin's widespread adoption and Cashu's cryptography could enable a mass-market, anonymous payment system within Signal.
  • The initiative invites users and privacy advocates to provide feedback and support the project at bitcoinforsignal.org.
