Kevin Durant has returned his lost Bitcoin to Coinbase, now valued at nearly 2 million.
- The value of the bitcoins Durant bought in 2016 has increased nearly 200-fold after years of losing access to the account.
- Buying $10,000 worth of Bitcoin would cost about $1.8 million at today's price of $117,000.
- Durant's company worked with Coinbase to restore access after years of login issues.
NBA star Kevin Durant has regained access to the Bitcoin account he opened in 2016, where the price was around $650. The coins remained untouched for nearly a decade after he lost his credentials.
With Bitcoin's price rising to $117,000, its assets have grown nearly 200-fold. A $10,000 Bitcoin at the 2016 exchange rate is now valued at approximately $1.8 million.
Durant's agent, Rich Kleiman, spoke about the recovery during CNBC's Game Plan conference in Los Angeles, calling it one of the athlete's most profitable investments.

A forgotten account profited from inactivity
Durant first bought bitcoin while playing for the Golden State Warriors after a cryptocurrency-themed dinner. He and Kleiman bought the bitcoins through Coinbase, but were unable to use them due to login issues.

Kleiman confirmed there had been no selling during several bullish cycles. “We never sold anything,” he said, adding that the loss of access inadvertently preserved Durant's stack during rallies and corrections.
Coinbase enters the game
Durant's company, Thirty Five Ventures, began partnering with Coinbase in 2021, and the exchange has been working with them to restore access ever since. Coinbase stated that its platform includes self-service recovery tools and 24/7 support for such cases.
Now that access has been restored, Durant owns Bitcoin, whose value has increased nearly 200-fold since he took office.
From the Warriors to the Rockets, Bitcoin Still Wins
The two-time NBA champion and Olympic gold medalist will play for the Houston Rockets this season after playing for the Phoenix Suns.
Off the court, his early experiment with Bitcoin turned into a multi-million dollar income, comparable to his most high-profile endorsements.
