A kindergarten teacher will appear in court for cryptocurrency mining.

In the Uysky District of Russia's Chelyabinsk Region, a criminal case has been opened against a kindergarten teacher for using electricity compensation to cover the costs of her family's mining farm.

According to investigators, the woman had the right to receive compensation for housing and communal services and submitted documents to the Uysky District Education Department for two and a half years in a row, receiving payments.

Most of the consumed electricity was used not for household needs, but to operate a mining rig set up at home by the defendant's husband, the prosecutor's office said. Damages to the Uysky District Education Department are estimated at 382,000 rubles.

A local resident was charged under Part 3 of Article 159.2 of the Russian Criminal Code (fraud in obtaining payments, committed on a large scale). Punishment under this article includes a fine of 100,000 rubles and up to six years in prison.

Earlier, Petr Fedorov, an associate professor at the National Research University “Moscow Institute of Electronic Technology,” reported that the Russian budget is losing at least 10 billion rubles in tax revenue due to illegal cryptocurrency mining.
