a16z: “2025 is the year of institutional crypto adoption”

According to the report, “Bitcoin continues to dominate more than half of the total crypto market capitalization.” While the global market capitalization has recovered since the last bull market, the focus is increasingly shifting to professional investors. a16z writes: “2025 is the year of institutional adoption.”
Major banks and tech giants such as BlackRock, Fidelity, JP Morgan, Visa, and PayPal are integrating crypto products into their core offerings. Most notably, Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs hold over $175 billion in on-chain assets.
a16z also dedicates a chapter to the adoption of stablecoins. While only a few years ago they were derided as a niche product, stablecoins are now “one of the cheapest and fastest ways to send US dollars – in less than a second for less than one US cent.”
With an annual transaction volume of $46 trillion, they are already surpassing PayPal and Visa and “rivaling the world's largest payment systems.” Furthermore, stablecoin issuers like Tether and Circle now hold over $150 billion in U.S. Treasuries—making them “among the 20 largest holders of U.S. Treasuries worldwide.”
a16z also sees explosive developments in the DeFi and infrastructure segments. “Blockchains today process more than 3,400 transactions per second—a hundred times more than in 2020.” According to the report, Solana is “a hub for on-chain economic activity,” while Ethereum has achieved “record throughput with low fees” through Layer 2 upgrades.
According to a16z, the US is bringing regulatory clarity through new laws like the Digital Asset Clarity Act, making the market “stronger than ever.” The venture firm expects “over $30 billion worth of real-world assets to be brought on-chain” by 2025.
