Jack Dorsey criticizes Tether donation to Bitcoin developers
- Stablecoin issuer Tether announced a $250,000 donation to the organization OpenSats this week. The non-profit foundation funds open-source projects related to the Bitcoin protocol. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino described the support on X as a contribution to promoting “free and open-source ecosystems that support Bitcoin.”
- For Jack Dorsey, however, this was apparently too small an amount. The Twitter co-founder and Block CEO quipped at X: “Why only 250K?” After another user asked how much Dorsey had contributed himself, he replied: “Over 21 million. You?” According to OpenSats, Dorsey had indeed donated 21 million US dollars to the organization in 2024 through his Start Small foundation.
- With annual profits of $13 billion and a reported company valuation of up to $500 billion, Tether is one of the most profitable players in the crypto industry.
- The Twitter founder's reaction immediately sparked debate in the Bitcoin community. Udi Wertheimer, co-founder of the Ordinals project Taproot Wizards, warned against a “competition with Dorsey on open-source funding,” but criticized Dorsey for his investments in Ocean. The Bitcoin mining pool had come under fire for blocking the processing of non-financial transactions, including the NFT-like Ordinals.
