Fundraising for sophisticated cryptocurrency investment vehicles has yet to fully experience the positive boost expected from Donald Trump's presidency, according to a new report from Crypto Insight Group.
The Hedge Fund Outlook for 2Q25 said the trend “remains positive, but slower than [fund] managers had expected under the new Trump administration.”
“Net inflows continue, but the pace is lagging behind earlier in the year as allocators adjust risk budgets,” the company added.
The Trump administration's explicitly pro-crypto stance has sparked optimism in the digital asset industry, fueling growth on the back of expected regulatory clarity in the US.
Expectations of a clear regulatory framework by June “may have been a bit optimistic,” Laura Vidiella del Blanco, head of investor relations for digital assets at VanEck, said in a report.
“While net new capital continues to flow into private funds, the first months of 2025 have brought a number of unexpected events that have clearly impacted allocators’ perception of the urgency of deployment and the speed at which many fund managers expected things to happen,” she added.
Trump gives and Trump takes away?
Despite optimism about what the pro-crypto administration in Washington, D.C. could achieve, President Trump's unveiling of his aggressive plans to impose tariffs on U.S. imports has led to volatility in financial markets, with cryptocurrencies being the hardest hit of any asset class.
Bitcoin fell to a six-month low of around $76,000 in the days after the new tariffs initially went into effect earlier this month. For the crypto community, it could be a sign that Trump giveth and Trump taketh away.
“Trump’s tariffs have already wreaked havoc on global markets and wiped out trillions of dollars,” Chris Solarz, chief investment officer at Amitis Capital, said in a report.
“His inconsistent and unpredictable rhetoric has undermined investor confidence and raised fears of a full-scale return to the protectionism that characterized the 1930s.”
Still, fund managers' overall views of the Trump administration are “overwhelmingly positive,” according to surveys cited in the report.
More than half (52%) of respondents said they expect more positive surprises from policy decisions in the next 12 months than expected, while less than 10% said they expect more negative surprises and about 40% believe decisions will be in line with their expectations.
