Trump pardons Binance founder Changpeng Zhao – BNB turns up the heat

  • US President Donald Trump has pardoned Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ). The Wall Street Journal reports this, citing insiders. According to the source, Trump signed a corresponding document on Wednesday. The pardon is likely based on alleged political persecution of Zhao.
  • White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump “exercised his constitutional authority by pardoning Mr. Zhao, who was prosecuted by the Biden administration as part of its crackdown on cryptocurrencies.” She added: “The Biden administration's crackdown on cryptocurrencies is over.”
  • CZ was sentenced to four months in prison for money laundering in April 2024, and has since served his sentence. Binance also had to pay a $4.3 billion fine.
  • In addition to CZ, Trump has already pardoned several major figures from the US crypto sector, including Ross Ulbricht (Silk Road founder) and Arthur Hayes (BitMEX founder).
  • Meanwhile, the news of CZ's pardon is boosting the price of the Binance coin BNB. Within the last hour, BNB gained 3.6 percent and is now trading at $1,122.
  • Coinbase recently announced its intention to offer BNB for trading. Anyone who registers with Coinbase and trades €30 worth of cryptocurrencies will receive €30 in Bitcoin.
