Scott Bessent: US Authorities Won't Buy Bitcoin

image US authorities do not plan to buy bitcoins on the open market, and the strategic reserve of the leading cryptocurrency will be replenished only with confiscated assets, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in an interview with Fox Business.

Scott Bessent dismissed American investors' expectations of high government demand for the country's first cryptocurrency as unrealistic. The official said the government would pursue a limited strategy for accumulating bitcoin:

“We have created a strategic reserve, but we will not buy Bitcoin.”

It is estimated that the US government currently holds between 198,109 BTC and 207,189 BTC, worth over $23 billion. However, the US Marshals Service (USMS) report indicates only 29,000 bitcoins, as the total bitcoin holdings previously included both confiscated and temporarily seized assets.

Adding to the uncertainty is the resignation of White House cryptocurrency adviser Bo Hines. According to media reports, Hines's dismissal was prompted by criticism for failing to implement President Donald Trump's cryptocurrency initiatives.

Earlier, European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde stated that no EU member state plans to create a Bitcoin reserve.
