A video showing Bitcoin transfers via iMessage has gone viral online.
Information has surfaced online that users can now directly send Bitcoin to their contacts via iMessage. The post's authors are referencing the new Macadamia Wallet tool.
We explain where this information came from and whether it's really possible to send Bitcoin via iMessage.
A video has gone viral on social media showing bitcoins being sent via iMessage, the built-in messaging app on Apple devices. It allows users to exchange messages, photos, videos, and other files online between iPhone, iPad, and Mac users.
In fact, this isn't a built-in Apple feature, but a third-party solution. The setup is as follows: iMessage uses the Macadamia wallet, which runs on the Cashu protocol (developed by callebtc). Fundamentally, transfers are processed through this wallet, and the messenger serves as a convenient interface for communication and sending transactions.
Detailed video instructions have started appearing online. The authors suggest downloading the Macadamia wallet. Then, connect to the Mint service to mint tokens. Then, top up the wallet with the minted tokens via Lightning invoice, pay for it using another wallet, and finally send the tokens via iMessage.
The developers of the wallet used by the video's authors confirm that their tools can be used to transfer crypto via Apple Messenger.
However, not everyone is successfully implementing the scheme. In messages to the developers' post, users complain about problems arising at various stages. Therefore, it's too early to say that cryptocurrency users have a stable tool for Bitcoin transfers in iMessage.
A video purporting to be offline Bitcoin transfers using Bitchat went viral online. However, it turns out that such a transaction also requires minting tokens and connecting third-party apps. Moreover, at least one user must be online to complete the transaction.
