Bitcoin Miner Compass Powers First Phase of 30-MW Iowa Data Center

Compass Mining announced Tuesday that it has begun work on the first phase of its bitcoin mining facility in Iowa.

Compass Mining Provides Power to Initial Phase of 30 MW Iowa Project

The first phase of the 8-megawatt (MW) project, part of a total 30-megawatt facility, is already operational, with construction on the remainder scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025. A report shared with Bitcoin.com News noted that the facility, located on a 5-acre site, expands Compass Mining’s portfolio of independent infrastructure by allowing customers to host their machines directly at the Iowa facility.

Compass Mining CEO Paul Gosker said the move gives the company greater control over its operations and gives customers a choice of hosting sites. The Iowa facility follows the recent launch of a hydro-cooled mining facility in North Dakota.

In 2024, Compass added nearly 50 MW of capacity across six U.S. states, including Indiana, Ohio, and Texas. The company confirmed that the expansion is in line with its strategy to grow its own infrastructure while maintaining partnerships with independent hosting providers.

The company did not disclose the expected completion date for the Iowa facility or the associated costs. “Expanding our own infrastructure is a key step in solidifying Compass Mining’s position as a leading player in the Bitcoin mining hosting space,” said Paul Gosker, CEO of Compass Mining. Gosker added:

Owning and managing our own properties gives clients greater operational control while allowing them to choose from our network of trusted third-party properties that best suit their individual needs and preferences.
