Changpeng Zhao warns about CZ-Memecoin: “Don’t buy the meme”

  • “While I appreciate the gesture, the fact that it's linked to a memecoin suggests that the creator is probably just trying to quickly monetize their interaction with me. That's something I don't condone: Don't buy the meme.”
  • The reason for this rejection: A statue of the Binance founder, left by unknown individuals at the Washington Monument, presumably in the hope that he would respond publicly to give the newly launched memecoin “CZ Golden Statue” a boost. CZ did respond, but not in the way that was likely intended.

While I want to appreciate the gesture, the fact that there is a meme coin associated with this means the creator probably just wanted to make a quick buck off an interaction from me. This is something I don't appreciate. Don't buy the meme.

  • Changpeng Zhao's enthusiasm for the sculpture was apparently limited. On X, the newly pardoned businessman replied: “I would never accept a statue of myself. What kind of egomaniac would have a statue of himself in their house?”
  • Whether Changpeng Zhao's cautionary words alone were to blame is debatable. In any case, the launch of the memecoin was anything but spectacular. According to data from the crypto analytics platform Nansen, its market capitalization fell from a high of around five million US dollars to below one million US dollars today.
