Basic information:

  • Metaplanet bought 1,241 bitcoins for 18.4 billion yen, increasing its total assets to 6,796 BTC.
  • The company's latest deal surpassed El Salvador's Bitcoin holdings and became the most active purchase since April 2024.
  • Metaplanet plans to reach 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025, following a strategy similar to MicroStrategy's accumulation tactics.

Tokyo Stock Exchange-listed investment firm Metaplanet added another 1,241 bitcoins (BTC) to its holdings, spending 18.4 billion yen (or $126 million at current exchange rates), according to information released Monday.

Following the purchase, Metaplanet's total assets are 6,796 BTC, worth over $706 million at current market prices. This has allowed them to surpass El Salvador's Bitcoin holdings, which are 6,174 BTC, according to the country's Bitcoin Office.

The trade was executed at an average price just above $102,119 per bitcoin, marking the company's most active purchase since its bitcoin treasury operations began in April 2024.

The company reported that its BTC return, a proprietary performance metric that shows the accumulation of bitcoin per share outstanding, reached 38% in the second quarter, after reaching 95.6% in the first quarter of 2025 and 309.8% in the fourth quarter of 2024. The metric, along with BTC and yen growth, is used to assess shareholder value creation through undiluted bitcoin growth.

Metaplanet is targeting 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025, with their treasury strategy increasingly resembling the high-confidence accumulation method pioneered by Michael Saylor (MSTR), who holds over 555,000 BTC worldwide.

Metaplanet currently remains the largest publicly traded Bitcoin holder in Asia and ranks 11th in the world.
