What you need to know:

  • According to Architect Partners, by the end of five years, Bitcoin will account for a quarter of the assets of the S&P 500 index.
  • Strategy's BTC strategy has outperformed the S&P 500 and Bitcoin since 2020.
  • Given this trend, treasury managers may face professional risks if they ignore BTC.

One analyst believes that Bitcoin is increasingly making its way into corporate treasuries and could become common practice by the end of the decade.

“I predict that given all the different strategies and their implementation, by 2030, a quarter of the S&P 500 companies will have BTC on their balance sheets as a long-term asset,” Elliot Chan, a partner at Architect Partners, said in his market note.

The strategy of holding bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset was unusual when Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, first rolled it out in August 2020. The company pitched BTC as a hedge against inflation, a diversification tool, and a way to differentiate itself in the market.

Then CEO Michael Saylor's public embrace of Bitcoin made the company the de facto spokesperson for BTC. Since then, MicroStrategy shares have increased more than 2,000%, significantly outperforming both the S&P 500 and Bitcoin over the same period, Chun noted.

GameStop became the latest company to follow suit, announcing this week that it had raised $1.3 billion through convertible notes to buy bitcoin. The company's shares initially rose after the announcement, but then suffered a correction, falling nearly 15% in a week.

Chun argued that treasurers could soon face career risks not from investing in bitcoin, but from ignoring it entirely. “Doing nothing is no longer a viable strategy,” he wrote.

According to Bitcoin Treasuries, publicly traded companies currently hold 665,618 BTC, which is about 3.17% of the total supply of the cryptocurrency. Strategy has a significant stake of 506,137 BTC.
