Crypto robber steals 11 million – disguised as a delivery man

- Cryptocurrencies have struck again with a “wrench attack.” A man posing as a delivery driver robbed an investor in San Francisco on Saturday morning. The stolen coins were worth $11 million.
- “Wrench attacks” are physical assaults on crypto holders, posing a particular risk to those who prefer self-custody. Security experts warn that such crimes will reach record levels in 2025.
- According to a police report reviewed by the San Francisco Chronicle, the suspect had disguised himself as a delivery man. He then pulled out a gun, held the homeowner down, and forced him to hand over his digital wallet credentials, as well as a laptop and a smartphone.
- “The bitter truth is that it is usually much easier to identify the suspects than to recover the stolen cryptocurrencies,” crime expert David Sehyeon Baek told Decrypt.
- According to the crypto self-custody provider Casa, 60 similar attacks have already occurred this year. In January, Ledger co-founder David Balland and his wife were also kidnapped by criminals.
- To prevent similar attacks, more and more Bitcoin veterans, including the popular influencer Plan B, are opting for Bitcoin ETFs or custody solutions from regulated crypto platforms, contrary to the old ideal of decentralization.
