What you need to know about the end of mining in Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyz authorities have imposed a complete ban on all mining farms across the country. The ban is in effect until the end of March 2026. This ban is due to reduced electricity generation and increased grid load during the winter.

We discuss the restrictions faced by miners in Kyrgyzstan and which other countries are imposing restrictions on cryptocurrency mining.

What's happened

Kamchybek Tashiev, head of the State Committee for National Security, announced that mining has been completely halted, and violators face criminal prosecution. He noted that the authorities expect to get through the winter without any rolling blackouts and urges citizens to conserve electricity.

Energy Minister Taalaibek Ibrayev confirmed that all mining farms have been shut down. He stated that the decision was made due to the power shortage, and that the situation is under his personal control. Mining, under the current load, posed additional risks to the power grid, so the shutdown was deemed necessary.

Plans for the future

Kyrgyzstan plans to assess the state of its power grid after the winter has passed. A decision on the possible resumption of mining farm operations will be made after analyzing the load and available resources. In the coming months, authorities are focusing on grid stability and energy conservation.

Not only Kyrgyzstan

Many countries are introducing temporary or permanent restrictions in an effort to reduce the load on their power grids and meet environmental goals. A brief overview shows that Kyrgyzstan is following the global trend.

  • Since 2021, China has had a complete ban on mining due to its high energy consumption and financial control.
  • Since 2021, Iran has been implementing seasonal mining shutdowns due to power shortages in summer and winter.
  • In January 2022, Kosovo decided to completely ban mining amid the energy crisis.
  • In Kuwait, large-scale raids were carried out against home and industrial mining farms between 2023 and 2025, as mining operations were severely overloading the network.
  • Norway announced a temporary ban on the creation of new PoW mining capacities in the summer of 2025.
  • In Canada, in the province of British Columbia, a permanent ban on connecting new mining projects has been in effect since October 2025.
  • In the US, New York State has had a moratorium on fossil fuel farm expansion in place since November 2022, with further restrictions under discussion for 2025.
  • Starting in 2024, Russia will introduce seasonal bans on mining operations in regions with capacity shortages. Experts note that such measures do not address the problem of illegal mining.
  • In Kazakhstan, illegal farms were shut down en masse in 2021–2022, and restrictions were imposed on official sites.

In countries where cryptocurrencies are banned, including Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, and Egypt, mining is automatically banned.
