An illegal mining farm stole electricity worth 8.2 million rubles.

In the village of Podvyaznovo in the Yaroslavl region, power engineers shut down an illegal mining farm. It stole 8.2 million rubles worth of electricity, RBC Crypto reports, citing Rosseti Center.
Local residents complained to the company about power surges. Power engineers subsequently conducted a raid and discovered an unauthorized power connection established from an overgrown area with a high fence and CCTV cameras along the perimeter.
It turned out that mining equipment was operating in a small house on the property. The company estimates that the electricity theft amounted to 832,500 kWh, or 8.2 million rubles. The power company has submitted the case materials to law enforcement.
“Illegal mining is a serious problem for any region's energy system, as it threatens the reliability and security of the power supply. All identified violations will be consistently suppressed, and those responsible will be held accountable in accordance with the law,” said Boris Ebzeev, CEO of Rosseti Centre.
The company reminded that theft of electricity on a large or especially large scale is punishable under Article 165 of the Russian Criminal Code (causing property damage through deception or abuse of trust in the absence of evidence of theft), with a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison and a fine. Rosseti Centre warned that violators also pay bills significantly higher than the cost of electricity used legally.
Last week, it was reported that energy workers in Dagestan spent three months hunting for an illegal mining rig in a Gazelle van. It was discovered using a quadcopter equipped with a thermal imaging camera.
