NHL ice hockey league enters into cooperation with Kalshi and Polymarket
- The National Hockey League (NHL) is entering into a multi-year partnership with crypto prediction markets Kalshi and Polymarket, according to a press release. The Wall Street Journal previously reported on the collaboration.
- Specifically, both platforms will gain access to the data sets and trademark rights of North America's largest ice hockey league. Furthermore, the Kalshi and Polymarket logos will be featured in game broadcasts in the future.
- The availability of the data sets is likely to open up a new market segment for crypto platforms: live sports betting.
- Crypto-based prediction markets in general have experienced strong growth this year. According to data from The Block, over 33,000 new bets were opened on Polymarket in September alone—a record number.
- Meanwhile, traditional financial markets are also taking notice of the newcomers. The parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), announced a $2 billion investment in Polymarket at the beginning of October.
- Basically, you can bet on pretty much anything on prediction markets: sports, finance, pop culture, politics, or even the Bitcoin price. Polymarket, for example, caused a stir when its predictions about the outcome of the US presidential election campaign were significantly more accurate than those of traditional pollsters.
- Now, thanks to the partnership with the NHL, the sector continues to grow. And so the press release ends with a statement from the Kalshi CEO: “One thing should be clear by now—prediction markets are here to stay.”
