PayPal makes sending money as easy as texting – even with Bitcoin & Co.
- PayPal is introducing Payment Links in the US. Users can create a unique, personalized link to send or request money – whether via SMS, Messenger, or email. The feature is scheduled to expand to the UK, Italy, and other markets in September.
- Bitcoin, Ethereum, PYUSD, and other cryptocurrencies will soon be integrated directly into the app's new peer-to-peer payment flow. PayPal aims to facilitate payments between PayPal, Venmo, and growing global wallet networks that support crypto and stablecoins.
- The links are private, can be used once, and expire after ten days if not redeemed. Recipients can use the payments immediately from their PayPal balance.
- As before, friends and family transfers via PayPal and Venmo remain exempt from 1099-K filing. For users, this means no tax forms for gifts, refunds, or split bills.
- The company is expanding its reach with Payment Links and the global platform PayPal World. In the second quarter, P2P transactions increased by 10 percent year-on-year, while Venmo reported its strongest growth in three years.
- PayPal is one of the major tech companies that was an early adopter of cryptocurrencies. As early as 2020, the company enabled its users to buy and sell Bitcoin and Ethereum directly within the app, later integrating crypto payments with select merchants. This was followed in 2023 by the launch of its own stablecoin, PYUSD.
- Those who want to experiment with Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies beyond just using payment apps, but want to hold real cryptocurrencies, should rely on regulated platforms. At Bitpanda, investors can buy Bitcoin, Ethereum, and many other coins easily, securely, and directly.
