Bitcoin thriller: Pete Davidson and Casey Affleck star in “Killing Satoshi”

  • Actors Pete Davidson (“Saturday Night Live”) and Oscar winner Casey Affleck star in the new film “Killing Satoshi.” Directed by Doug Liman, known for “The Bourne Identity” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” he describes the film as a “David versus Goliath” story that focuses on power, money, and control. The screenplay was written by Nick Schenk, a longtime collaborator of Clint Eastwood (“Gran Torino,” “The Mule”).
  • The plot combines political intrigue, high-tech espionage, and a race against time as governments, Wall Street, and Silicon Valley vie for supremacy. The film is being produced by Ryan Kavanaugh's Proxima and Aperture Media Partners. Principal photography begins next month in London, with a premiere scheduled for 2026.
  • “Killing Satoshi” is already the second major film project with a crypto focus this year: Netflix, under Obama's production company Higher Ground, is working on the series “The Altruists” about the FTX scandal. In 2022, the largest crypto exchange in the US collapsed due to a multi-billion dollar fraud that landed founder Sam Bankman-Fried in prison for 115 years. Documentaries about Bitcoin, NFTs, and crypto scams are also increasingly finding their way onto streaming platforms. A sign that the crypto industry is no longer just a financial topic, but is also providing material in pop culture.
  • Satoshi Nakamoto is the pseudonym of the unknown inventor of Bitcoin, who published the famous white paper in 2008 and mined the first block of the blockchain, the “Genesis Block,” in January 2009. To this day, there is only speculation about his true identity—whether it was an individual or a group remains unclear. Nakamoto withdrew from public life in 2010, but left behind a technology that laid the foundation for the entire crypto industry.
