Are altcoins facing a capital flood? T. Rowe Price files for crypto ETF

- T. Rowe Price, a long-established asset management firm with $1.77 trillion in assets under management, has filed an S-1 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission to launch its first crypto exchange-traded fund. Altcoins, in particular, could benefit from massive capital inflows.
- The T. Rowe Price Active Crypto ETF is described as an actively managed product. It aims to outperform the FTSE Crypto US Listed Index, which tracks the performance of the ten largest U.S.-tradable crypto assets by market capitalization, over a period of one year or longer.
- The fund will invest in “eligible” cryptocurrencies. According to the filing, these include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Cardano, Avalanche, Litecoin, Polkadot, Dogecoin, HBAR, Bitcoin Cash, Chainlink, Stellar Lumen, and Shiba Inu.
- “The significance of T. Rowe Price's filing for an actively managed crypto ETF cannot be overstated,” wrote Nate Geraci, president of NovaDius Wealth Management, in an X-post. “A company founded in 1937 is now building the complete infrastructure to process crypto trading and manage a crypto ETF.”
- Geraci pointed out that this demonstrates how legacy asset managers are struggling to figure out how to integrate crypto assets into their strategies. “Hoping for crypto to disappear is not a good business strategy,” Geraci said.
- A few weeks ago, the SEC approved new listing standards that simplify the approval process for crypto ETFs. Since then, dozens of new crypto-related products have flooded the market.
- However, processing of these applications is currently paused due to the U.S. government shutdown. The shutdown leaves the SEC with limited resources, and the agency is unlikely to process any crypto ETF applications until the government reopens.
- If you want to buy Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, you can do so at Coinbase, among others. Currently, you'll receive €30 in free Bitcoin if you buy at least €30 worth of cryptocurrencies.
