Digital Ruble: Why It's Not Dangerous

According to VTsIOM (All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center), most Russians do not want to use the digital ruble. This was reported by 59% of respondents who took part in a survey in August 2024. Among the disadvantages of the digital ruble, Russians most often indicated the possibility of hacking and fraud.

In addition, people are afraid that the transition to a new form of money will be forced. The community is concerned that the government will transfer all social payments, including pensions and benefits, to digital rubles.

However, according to Anna Bakina, this information is not true.

“There is no forced transfer of people to the digital ruble and it is not expected. The issue is not and has never been raised this way. This is disinformation,” she emphasized (from here on, quotes from TASS →.

The head of the Central Bank, Elvira Nabiullina, spoke about this back in 2023. In addition, the regulator has repeatedly emphasized the voluntary use of the digital ruble in its materials dedicated to this innovation.

Another popular myth: the expiration date of digital rubles. Answering the question about the validity period of the new rubles, Anna Bakina explained that digital rubles do not have an expiration date. They will not spoil or burn.

“The digital ruble has no statute of limitations, a person has the right to spend this money whenever he deems it necessary… the funds in the digital account belong to the owner of this account and he has the right to dispose of them at his own discretion,” she explained.

According to Anna Bakina, scammers take advantage of citizens’ poor awareness by disseminating false information.

“We see that social engineering methods are so diverse and targeted at our citizens that it is important to raise awareness among citizens and conduct educational work,” she added.

What is important to know about the digital ruble

The digital ruble is an alternative to regular money that will not replace cash, but will be used at will. No fees will be charged for transfers in digital rubles, but no interest will be charged on the balance either.

The new rubles will be stored in the Central Bank, but they can be used through your bank's app. In the future, the regulator plans to develop tools for paying with digital rubles in places where there is no Internet.
