Key Points:

  • Mike Selig, President Donald Trump’s choice for the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, is slated to attend his Senate confirmation hearing on Nov. 19, 2025.
  • Selig, who is currently in charge of the SEC’s Crypto Task Force, was nominated after the retraction of ex-CFTC commissioner Brian Quintenz.
  • If given the nod, Selig would preside over the CFTC while Congress puts the finishing touches on a piece of legislation that could empower the agency with jurisdiction over crypto spot trading.

Mike Selig, the individual nominated by U.S. President Donald Trump to helm the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, will appear before a Senate hearing for his confirmation on Nov. 19, 2025, as the nation’s capital gets closer to revising digital asset regulation.

Selig, who presently acts as the leading legal advisor to the SEC’s Crypto Task Force, was officially selected last month after Trump rescinded his initial selection, previous CFTC commissioner Brian Quintenz.

CoinDesk indicated in early October that Selig had surfaced as a leading contender for the post.

Should he be confirmed, Selig would succeed acting chair Caroline Pham as legislators pick up their endeavor to finalize a digital asset market structure bill, potentially endowing the CFTC with explicit control over spot trading in the cryptocurrency space.

The path ahead still involves the Senate Agriculture Committee to conduct a markup session for its proposed law in addition to the Senate Banking Committee to complete and conduct a markup session for their personal version of the proposed law. Following that, the Senate will need to hold a full chamber vote on the joint effort, which if successful would forward the proposed law to the House of Representatives for another vote, steps that could prolong the process into early 2026.
