Lomond School, situated in Helensburgh, Scotland, has initiated a fully endowed “Satoshi Scholarship,” expanding its innovative use of Bitcoin from financial transactions to the core of its educational environment.
This award will cover two years of tuition and accommodation at Burnbrae, the institution’s boarding facility, for a single student who would otherwise face challenges in accessing such an educational opportunity without assistance.
Prospective students from around the globe can submit applications, with the submission window closing on May 24.
The scholarship initiative follows a period of significant transformation at Lomond, which distinguished itself as the world’s inaugural school to accept Bitcoin for tuition fees starting in Autumn 2025. A segment of parents are already settling their dues in Bitcoin, and the school has commenced the establishment of a BTC reserve, bolstered by contributions from benefactors within the broader Bitcoin community.
School administrators characterize this as the nascent phase of a financial preservation strategy, influenced by the principles of sound money and enduring financial stability that are central to Bitcoin ethos.
In more tangible ways, BTC is now integrated into campus operations. Lomond manages its own node and operates several mining rigs, which not only contribute to the Bitcoin network’s integrity but also generate heat utilized for warming classrooms.
A real-time display of the mempool, located in the study and library areas, provides students and faculty with a view into the network’s transaction activity, transforming an abstract technological protocol into a visible element of the daily school experience.

A bitcoin-focused curriculum
In conjunction with the technological infrastructure, the school is collaborating with economist Saifedean Ammous, the author of “The Bitcoin Standard,” to develop an academic program that merges Bitcoin principles with Austrian economics. The objective of this course is to offer pupils a systematic introduction to fundamental concepts such as sound money, time preference, and capital formation, all examined through the lens of BTC’s design.
Advocates view this approach as a method to equip students for an evolving financial landscape, although some educational observers express reservations about the extent to which an educational institution should align itself with a specific monetary doctrine.
The newly introduced scholarship is positioned at the nexus of these forward-thinking objectives and a more fundamental concern regarding educational accessibility. Available to both day and boarding students from Senior 1 through Upper Sixth, it is anticipated to particularly attract students embarking on the two-year International Baccalaureate program in Lower Sixth.
Candidates will be subject to the usual admissions assessments and a financial needs evaluation, and the selected recipient will be expected to serve as a positive influence and an engaged participant within the school community.
Principal Claire Chisholm commented that the contribution funding the scholarship underscores the significant interest this initiative has garnered from the worldwide Bitcoin community.
For families and students who share this particular interest, Lomond’s innovative endeavor provides an opportunity to pursue education within an environment where discussions concerning currency, technology, and the future trajectory of the economy are an integral part of the daily discourse, rather than a subject confined to distant contemplation.
Further details and application instructions can be found on the school’s official website.
